US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has said he will issue an order for a new moratorium on deep water oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico after a court blocked an earlier ban.

A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that the six-month moratorium put in place in the wake of April's massive oil spill was too broad.

But suspending drilling "was and is the right decision", Mr Salazar said.
The White House had already said it would challenge the judge's ruling.
The judge said the lengthy ban was "invalid" and could not be justified, as the negative impact on local businesses was simply too great.

First the US claims they need to reduce their dependency on foreign energy sources in order to increase their "energy security". Then they invade Iraq to grab its oil, and threaten Iran with the same.

Then they have a huge spill in their own back yard, which poisons their coastline...so they call for a ban on deep water drilling, which in turn will reduce the supply of oil they have available for themselves, and will lower their level of "energy security" by increasing their dependency on foreign oil supplies. Like Iraq.

Oh the irony...

you ever see a dog chasing its own tail? We just haven't gotten tired of it yet here in America. By "we" I mean the ones in charge. I've been dizzy and waiting for the politicians to give it a rest.

You people tell me that I cant complain if I don't vote. Well...
I say when your dumb ass politicians take actions that lead to higher gas prices you can't complain. You just have to bend over and take it.

Do you all not see what's happening? Investors are looking towards the future. Notice how a majority of shit that's made comes from over seas. It's not just because it's cheap labor. It gives us a chance to use our land for other shit like strip malls and housing communities. Not only that, but it keeps up from polluting the shit out of our country. Of course there is some greed associated with that, but I think the two aforementioned points do have the biggest impact on how things work.

As for us being dependent on foreign oil, not likely. We have plenty of Black Giants (huge as oil deposits) in the U.S. What the U.S. is doing is using up everyone else oil and stock piling our own under the guise of environmental protection laws and scarce deposits of oil around the country. Once we get done paying for and using up everyone else shit, we'll have our own to keep us running and maybe sell some to the other countries.

This argument makes sense actually...in the short term however, the U.S. economy is geared around cheap oil. It's far cheaper to get an African or an Arab to pump oil out of the ground, than to get a U.S. citizen to do the same.

The unfortunate consequence, is that Americans get pinched when the prices spike a little higher that what the economy can cope with at that time. The economy can't react fast enough.
